BORREGO SPRINGS LIBRARY - PRIDE OF OUR COMMUNITY - MEET CRISTIN MCVEY

“Ten years ago, I discovered the town of Borrego Springs, and my life changed forever. I had always wanted to live in a small town, with other creative people and nature lovers, but I just didn’t think it was possible in crowded Southern California. Although it took several years to call this place my home, I feel so lucky to be living in such a beautiful place. Everyday something speaks to me: a magical sunrise, a crescent moon nestled beneath Venus, a pack of coyotes crossing my yard, or the smell of the desert after the rain.

“When I told my friends in the city that I was moving to the desert, they thought I was crazy. Whereas they saw my moving here as living in “the middle of nowhere,” I felt like I was living in the center of the universe, and just one look at the starry sky on a clear night proved that reality to me. While the natural beauty is what struck me the most when I visited Borrego Springs in those early days, I made this place my home because of the people who live here.

“There is something very special about the community of Borrego Springs—it is hard to put your finger on exactly. It feels like time slows down, and what’s most important in life springs forth, like sharing a laugh with a neighbor, spotting a bighorn sheep on the Montezuma grade, listening to a Mozart concert at the library where I work, or just being, happily enjoying my life as it unfolds every day.
